Hardwood flooring is made from genuine milled timber and comes in two primary forms: solid hardwood and engineered hardwood. Solid hardwood planks are cut from a single piece of wood, typically three-quarters of an inch thick, and can be sanded and refinished multiple times over their lifespan. Engineered hardwood features a real hardwood veneer bonded to a plywood or high-density fiberboard core, which gives it superior dimensional stability in environments where temperature and humidity fluctuate. Both types deliver the rich, organic beauty that only real wood can provide. In the Lehigh Valley and across northern New Jersey, hardwood floors remain the most requested flooring upgrade we install. Homeowners in Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, Paramus, and surrounding communities consistently choose hardwood because it adds character, complements virtually any interior style, and increases resale value. Whether you are building a new home in Bucks County or renovating a historic property in Bergen County, hardwood flooring is a timeless investment that pays dividends for decades.
Hardwood flooring offers a combination of advantages that few other materials can match. First and foremost, it adds measurable value to your home. National real estate data consistently shows that homes with hardwood floors sell faster and command higher prices than those with carpet or vinyl. Beyond resale value, hardwood is remarkably durable when properly maintained. A solid oak floor can last 75 to 100 years, and engineered hardwood typically lasts 30 to 50 years depending on the wear layer thickness. Hardwood is also hypoallergenic. Unlike carpet, it does not trap dust mites, pet dander, or pollen, making it an excellent choice for allergy sufferers throughout the PA and NJ region. Cleaning is simple: regular sweeping and occasional damp mopping keep the surface looking pristine. From a design perspective, hardwood offers unmatched versatility. It comes in dozens of species, stain colors, plank widths, and finishes, so you can create anything from a rustic farmhouse aesthetic to a sleek modern look. And when the surface eventually shows wear, you can refinish it rather than replace it, which is both economical and environmentally responsible.
Every hardwood project at VM Power Flooring begins with a free in-home consultation. One of our project managers visits your home to measure the space, assess your subfloor condition, discuss species and stain options, and provide a detailed written estimate. Once you approve the scope of work, we schedule your installation within one to three weeks, depending on material lead times. On installation day, our NWFA-certified crews arrive with all tools and materials. We begin by preparing the subfloor, which may include leveling, moisture testing, and installing a vapor barrier. For nail-down solid hardwood, we use pneumatic nailers to fasten each plank to the subfloor with precision. For engineered hardwood, we may use glue-down, float, or nail-down methods depending on the substrate and your home's construction. We acclimate all materials in your home for a minimum of 48 hours before installation to ensure the wood adjusts to your home's humidity level. After installation, we inspect every seam and transition, install baseboards and trim, and perform a thorough cleanup. Most rooms are completed in two to five days, and you can walk on the floors within 24 hours of the final coat if a site-finished application is chosen.
Hardwood flooring works beautifully in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and home offices. These areas benefit from hardwood's warmth, sound quality, and visual appeal. Open-concept floor plans in particular look stunning with continuous hardwood running through multiple rooms, creating a seamless flow that makes spaces feel larger. In the Lehigh Valley and northern New Jersey, we frequently install hardwood on main floors and upper levels of single-family homes, townhouses, and condominiums. Engineered hardwood is the better choice for below-grade installations such as finished basements, since its layered construction resists moisture-related expansion better than solid wood. We also recommend engineered hardwood over radiant heat systems, which are increasingly popular in newer Northampton County and Bucks County homes. Kitchens can accommodate hardwood as long as spills are cleaned promptly, though many homeowners prefer luxury vinyl plank in high-moisture zones. Bathrooms and laundry rooms are the only areas where we generally advise against hardwood, since sustained exposure to water can cause warping and cupping over time.
VM Power Flooring sources materials from the industry's most respected manufacturers, including Shaw, Mohawk, Bruce, Mannington, Mirage, and Mercier. We carry domestic species such as red oak, white oak, hickory, maple, ash, and walnut, as well as exotic options like Brazilian cherry (jatoba), acacia, and tigerwood. White oak has emerged as the most popular species in our market thanks to its tight grain, excellent hardness rating, and natural resistance to moisture. Plank widths range from traditional two-and-a-quarter-inch strips up to wide-plank formats of seven inches or more. Wider planks showcase the wood's natural character and create a more contemporary look, while narrower strips suit traditional and colonial-style homes found throughout the Lehigh Valley and Bergen County. We offer prefinished hardwood with factory-applied UV-cured urethane coatings for faster installation and consistent color, as well as unfinished hardwood that we sand and stain on site for a fully custom look. Popular finish options include matte, satin, semi-gloss, and wire-brushed textures.
Maintaining hardwood floors is straightforward when you follow a few simple practices. Sweep or vacuum regularly using a soft-bristle attachment to remove grit and debris that can scratch the finish. Damp-mop with a hardwood-specific cleaner once a week. Avoid soaking the floor with water or using harsh chemicals like vinegar, ammonia, or steam mops, which can dull the finish and damage the wood. Place felt pads under furniture legs to prevent scratches, and use doormats at entryways to catch dirt and moisture before it reaches your floors. In Pennsylvania and New Jersey, seasonal humidity changes are a real consideration. During winter, indoor air can become very dry, causing wood to contract and gaps to appear between planks. A whole-house humidifier set between 35 and 55 percent relative humidity will minimize this seasonal movement. In summer, air conditioning naturally helps control humidity levels. If you have pets, keep nails trimmed to reduce surface scratches. With proper care, your hardwood floors will maintain their beauty for decades, and when they eventually show wear, our refinishing team can sand them down and apply a fresh coat of finish to make them look new again.

Common questions about hardwood flooring in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Hardwood flooring installation in our service area typically costs between $8 and $15 per square foot, including materials and labor. Solid oak on the lower end starts around $8 to $10 per square foot, while exotic species or wide-plank engineered hardwood can reach $12 to $15. We provide free in-home estimates with exact pricing based on your specific project.
Most hardwood installations take 2 to 5 days for an average-sized room (200 to 400 square feet). A full first floor of 800 to 1,200 square feet typically takes 4 to 7 days. This includes subfloor preparation, acclimation time, installation, and trim work. We schedule a clear timeline during your free consultation so you know exactly what to expect.
Solid hardwood is ideal for above-grade living spaces where you want the option to refinish multiple times over 50+ years. Engineered hardwood is better for basements, over radiant heat, or in areas with higher humidity fluctuations. Both offer real wood beauty. Our team evaluates your subfloor, room location, and lifestyle to recommend the best option during your free estimate.
In many cases, yes. Engineered hardwood can float over existing tile, vinyl, or laminate if the surface is level and in good condition. Solid hardwood typically requires a plywood or oriented strand board subfloor for nail-down installation. We always inspect your existing floor during the estimate visit to determine the best approach and whether removal is necessary.
Sweep or vacuum with a soft-bristle attachment regularly and damp-mop weekly with a hardwood-specific cleaner. Avoid excess water, vinegar, and steam mops. Use felt pads under furniture and doormats at entryways. Maintain indoor humidity between 35% and 55% to prevent seasonal gaps. With basic care, hardwood floors last decades before needing refinishing.
Yes. Our hardwood installers hold NWFA (National Wood Flooring Association) and CFI (Certified Flooring Installers) credentials — the industry's two most rigorous certifications. This ensures proper subfloor preparation, moisture testing, acclimation, and finishing on every project. We stand behind every installation.
White oak is the most popular species in the Lehigh Valley and northern NJ market. It has a tight grain pattern, a Janka hardness rating of 1,360, and excellent moisture resistance compared to red oak. It takes stain beautifully and works in both traditional and modern interiors. Hickory is the second most requested species for homeowners who want a more rustic, high-character look.
Hardwood offers superior resale value, a longer lifespan (50-100 years vs. 15-25 years for LVP), and the warmth of real wood. LVP is more waterproof and typically 30-40% less expensive. For main living areas and bedrooms, we generally recommend hardwood. For basements, kitchens, and high-moisture areas, LVP is often the more practical choice.
