Carpet is a soft-surface flooring material made from synthetic or natural fibers tufted or woven into a backing. It is the only flooring type that provides genuine cushion underfoot, sound absorption, and thermal insulation in a single product. Modern residential carpet comes in three primary constructions: cut pile, loop pile, and cut-and-loop (a combination of both). Cut pile varieties include plush, frieze, and textured styles, while loop pile options include Berber and level-loop patterns. Professional carpet installation involves stretching the carpet over a pad and securing it to tack strips around the perimeter of the room, or in the case of commercial glue-down carpet, adhering it directly to the subfloor. Proper installation requires specialized tools including a power stretcher, knee kicker, seam iron, and carpet trimmer. At VM Power Flooring, our CFI-certified installers bring decades of combined experience to every carpet project in the Lehigh Valley, Bucks County, Bergen County, and surrounding communities. The difference between a properly stretched carpet and a DIY or poorly installed job is visible within months: wrinkles, ripples, and premature wear appear when carpet is not installed to industry standards.
Carpet delivers comfort, warmth, and quiet in a way that no hard-surface flooring can match. Walking barefoot on a plush carpet with quality padding underneath is a distinctly cozy experience, which is why bedrooms remain carpet's most popular application in our PA and NJ service area. The acoustic benefits of carpet are significant. It absorbs airborne sound and reduces impact noise transmission between floors, which is a major consideration in multi-story homes, townhouses, and condominiums in communities like Bethlehem, Easton, Paramus, and Wayne. Parents with second-floor bedrooms above living spaces frequently choose carpet specifically for noise reduction. Carpet also provides thermal insulation, trapping air in its fibers and helping rooms feel warmer in winter. This can translate to modest energy savings in the cold Pennsylvania and New Jersey winters. From a safety perspective, carpet provides traction that reduces slip-and-fall risk, which is especially important in homes with young children or elderly family members. It also provides a softer landing surface if falls occur. Budget is another significant advantage. Carpet is the most affordable flooring option per square foot, with installed prices ranging from $3 to $8 per square foot, making it accessible for homeowners who need to cover large areas without a significant financial commitment.
VM Power Flooring approaches every carpet installation with the same care and professionalism as our hardwood and tile projects. The process begins with a free in-home estimate where we measure every room, discuss carpet styles and padding options, and identify any subfloor issues that need to be addressed. We help you select the right fiber type (nylon, polyester, triexta, or wool), pile style, and color based on your lifestyle, traffic patterns, and design preferences. On installation day, our crew removes and disposes of your old flooring if applicable. We inspect the subfloor for damage, squeaks, or unevenness, making repairs as needed. New tack strips are installed around the perimeter of each room, and we lay quality carpet padding (typically 7/16-inch, 8-pound density for residential use) over the entire surface. The carpet is then rolled out, positioned, and seamed where necessary using a hot-melt seam tape and iron for invisible joins. Our installers use a power stretcher, not just a knee kicker, to ensure the carpet is tightly stretched across the room. This is the single most important step in preventing wrinkles and ripples over time. Finally, we trim edges, tuck carpet into transitions, and vacuum the entire installation. A typical bedroom takes four to six hours, and a full floor of three to four rooms can usually be completed in a single day.
Bedrooms are the ideal application for carpet. The softness, warmth, and sound absorption create a comfortable, quiet sleeping environment that hard surfaces simply cannot replicate. Master bedrooms, children's rooms, and guest rooms throughout the Lehigh Valley and northern New Jersey consistently use carpet as the flooring of choice. Family rooms and bonus rooms in basements are another popular application. These casual living spaces benefit from carpet's comfort and acoustic properties, particularly when used for movie watching, gaming, or play areas. In below-grade basements, we recommend synthetic fiber carpet with moisture-resistant padding and antimicrobial treatment to guard against the humidity common in PA and NJ basements. Stairways are a practical application for carpet as well. Carpet on stairs provides traction and reduces noise compared to bare hardwood, which can be slippery and loud. We install both wall-to-wall carpet on stairs and custom stair runners with hardwood edges for a more finished look. Home offices and dens benefit from carpet's sound absorption, particularly for video calls and focused work. Commercial settings such as offices and multi-family common areas also use carpet extensively for acoustic control and comfort.
We carry carpet from the industry's top manufacturers including Shaw, Mohawk, Stainmaster, Karastan, Dreamweaver, and Phenix. Each offers extensive style libraries with hundreds of colors and textures. Nylon is the most popular residential carpet fiber and for good reason. It is the most durable, resilient, and stain-resistant synthetic option. Shaw's Anso nylon and Mohawk's SmartStrand (triexta) are among our best-selling products for families with kids and pets. Polyester carpet, including PET polyester made from recycled plastic bottles, offers excellent stain resistance at a lower price point. It is softer than nylon but does not spring back as well in high-traffic areas. Triexta (branded as SmartStrand by Mohawk) combines nylon-level durability with built-in stain protection that never washes or wears off. Wool carpet is the premium natural option, prized for its beauty, fire resistance, and environmental sustainability, though it costs significantly more than synthetic alternatives. For padding, we use high-quality options from Carpenter and Leggett & Platt that provide the right balance of comfort, support, and durability. The padding you choose affects how the carpet feels, sounds, and wears, so we advise on the best match for your selected carpet and room application.
Regular maintenance extends the life and appearance of your carpet significantly. Vacuum at least twice a week in high-traffic areas and once a week in bedrooms and low-traffic rooms. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter and adjustable brush height to effectively remove dirt without damaging carpet fibers. Professional deep cleaning should be performed every 12 to 18 months. Hot water extraction (commonly called steam cleaning) is the method recommended by most carpet manufacturers and is the most effective method for deep cleaning. This process removes embedded dirt, allergens, and stains that vacuuming alone cannot reach. Address spills immediately by blotting (never rubbing) with a clean white cloth and applying a carpet-specific spot cleaner. Many modern carpets come with built-in stain protection that makes cleanup easier, but prompt attention to spills always produces better results than delayed treatment. Place mats at entryways to catch dirt and moisture before they reach your carpet. Rearrange furniture periodically to distribute wear patterns, and use carpet protectors under heavy furniture to prevent crushing. In the Lehigh Valley and northern NJ, where we track through road salt and grit during winter months, frequent vacuuming during the cold season is especially important. With proper care, quality residential carpet lasts 10 to 15 years. Budget carpet in high-traffic areas may show wear sooner, which is why we always recommend the best quality your budget allows.

Common questions about carpet installation in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Carpet installation in our service area costs between $3 and $8 per square foot including materials, padding, and labor. Basic polyester carpet starts around $3 to $4 per square foot installed. Mid-range nylon and triexta products run $5 to $7, and premium wool or high-end nylon options reach $7 to $8. These prices include removal of old flooring, new padding, and full professional labor.
A single bedroom (150 to 200 square feet) takes about half a day. A full floor of 3 to 4 rooms is typically completed in one day. Larger homes with multiple floors may take 2 days. We remove old flooring, install new padding, stretch and seam the carpet, and clean up all in the same visit. You can walk on the carpet and move furniture back immediately after installation.
For bedrooms, we recommend a soft plush or textured cut-pile carpet in nylon or triexta fiber with a premium 7/16-inch, 8-pound density pad. This combination provides maximum comfort underfoot and sound absorption. Lighter colors and longer pile heights work well in bedrooms since traffic is typically lighter than in living areas.
Every 12 to 18 months for standard households. Homes with pets, children, or allergy sufferers should schedule professional cleaning every 6 to 12 months. Most carpet manufacturers recommend professional cleaning at regular intervals to maintain appearance and longevity. We recommend hot water extraction (steam cleaning) as the most effective method endorsed by carpet manufacturers.
Yes, though we generally advise against covering hardwood in good condition since it adds significant home value. If you want the comfort of carpet, we can install it directly over clean, flat hardwood using standard tack strips and padding. This approach is reversible: the carpet can be removed later to reveal the original hardwood underneath.
We recommend triexta (SmartStrand) or solution-dyed nylon for pet owners. These fibers have built-in stain resistance that handles pet accidents better than traditional nylon or polyester. A low, dense loop or textured cut pile is more durable against pet claws than plush styles. Moisture-resistant padding with antimicrobial treatment adds another layer of protection.
Yes. We install custom stair runners using broadloom carpet or finished runner products. Options include traditional straight installations, waterfall style that wraps over each step nose, and Hollywood style that tightly follows each step and riser. We can also install carpet on the full stair width with exposed hardwood edges for a classic look.
Quality nylon or triexta carpet in a home with normal foot traffic typically lasts 10 to 15 years. Premium wool carpet can last 15 to 20 years with proper care. The padding, foot traffic level, and maintenance routine all affect lifespan. High-traffic areas like hallways and family rooms may show wear sooner than bedrooms and guest rooms.
