Luxury vinyl plank, commonly called LVP, is a multi-layer synthetic flooring product designed to replicate the look and texture of real hardwood at a more accessible price point. Each plank consists of several layers: a durable wear layer on top that resists scratches and stains, a high-definition photographic layer that reproduces realistic wood grain patterns, a rigid or flexible core that provides structural stability, and a backing layer that offers sound absorption and moisture resistance. Modern LVP has evolved dramatically from the sheet vinyl of decades past. Today's products feature embossed-in-register textures that you can feel with your fingertips, beveled edges for authentic plank definition, and rigid SPC (stone polymer composite) or WPC (wood polymer composite) cores that make the planks dimensionally stable and fully waterproof. Across the Lehigh Valley, Bucks County, and Bergen County, LVP has become one of the fastest-growing flooring categories we install, particularly in kitchens, basements, mudrooms, and households with young children or pets.
The primary advantage of LVP is its waterproof construction. Unlike hardwood or laminate, luxury vinyl plank can handle standing water, making it suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements where moisture exposure is a genuine concern. This is especially valuable in Pennsylvania and New Jersey homes where basement flooding, kitchen spills, and bathroom humidity are common realities. Beyond moisture resistance, LVP is exceptionally durable. The wear layer on premium products ranges from 12 to 28 mils thick, providing protection against scratches from pet claws, scuffs from furniture, and dents from dropped objects. Families with dogs, cats, and active children consistently tell us that LVP holds up better than any other flooring they have owned. Comfort underfoot is another notable benefit. LVP with a WPC core includes a built-in foam or cork backing that provides cushion and warmth that tile and hardwood cannot match. This also makes it quieter to walk on. Installation is faster and less disruptive than hardwood, with most rooms completed in a single day. And with prices ranging from $5 to $10 per square foot installed, LVP delivers remarkable value for homeowners who want the hardwood look without the hardwood budget.
VM Power Flooring follows a meticulous installation process for every luxury vinyl plank project. We start with a free in-home estimate where our project manager measures your space, evaluates the subfloor, and helps you select the right product from our catalog of top brands. Once materials are ordered and delivered, our crews arrive on installation day ready to work. Subfloor preparation is the foundation of a successful LVP installation. We check for flatness using a straight edge and address any high or low spots with leveling compound. The subfloor must be flat to within 3/16 of an inch over 10 feet for a proper floating installation. If your existing floor is tile, vinyl, or laminate in good condition, we can often install directly over it, saving you the cost of removal. For click-lock floating installations, our installers work row by row, staggering joints for a natural appearance and maintaining the correct expansion gap along all walls. For glue-down applications, we use manufacturer-recommended adhesive to bond each plank to the subfloor for maximum stability in high-traffic areas. We finish every project with transition strips at doorways, quarter-round or shoe molding along walls, and a complete cleanup. Most single-room installations are completed in one day, and whole-house projects typically take two to four days.
Luxury vinyl plank is one of the most versatile flooring options available, suitable for virtually every room in the home. Kitchens are the number one application we see in the Lehigh Valley and Bergen County. Homeowners love that they can get the look of white oak or walnut without worrying about water damage from sink splashes, dishwasher leaks, or spilled drinks. Basements are the second most popular application. Many homes in Northampton County, Monroe County, and Passaic County have below-grade living spaces that are prone to seasonal moisture. LVP's waterproof core makes it the ideal choice for these environments, whereas hardwood and laminate would be at risk. Bathrooms and laundry rooms also benefit from LVP's moisture resistance. We install waterproof luxury vinyl in master bathrooms, powder rooms, and laundry areas throughout our PA and NJ service area. LVP works equally well in living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways. Many homeowners choose to run a single LVP product throughout their entire home for a seamless, open look. Commercial spaces like offices, retail shops, and rental properties also benefit from LVP's durability and low maintenance requirements.
We source luxury vinyl plank from manufacturers known for quality, realism, and long-term durability. Our top-selling brands include Shaw Floorte, COREtec by USFloors, Mohawk RevWood, Mannington Adura, and MSI Everlife. Each offers extensive style collections that mimic popular wood species like white oak, hickory, walnut, and acacia, as well as stone-look options for a modern aesthetic. When selecting LVP, there are a few key specifications to consider. Wear layer thickness determines scratch and stain resistance: we recommend a minimum of 20 mils for residential use and 28 mils for homes with large dogs or heavy foot traffic. Core construction matters too. SPC (stone polymer composite) cores are thinner, harder, and more dent-resistant, making them ideal for high-traffic areas. WPC (wood polymer composite) cores are slightly thicker, warmer, and quieter underfoot, with built-in acoustic backing. Plank dimensions range from narrow 6-inch widths to wide 9-inch formats, and lengths vary from 36 inches to over 70 inches. Longer, wider planks create a more realistic wood look and reduce the number of visible seams. We help every customer choose the right combination of style, performance, and budget during the consultation process.
One of the biggest advantages of luxury vinyl plank is how easy it is to maintain. For daily cleaning, simply sweep or vacuum with a soft-bristle attachment to remove dust and debris. For weekly cleaning, damp-mop with a pH-neutral vinyl floor cleaner. Unlike hardwood, you do not need to worry about excess moisture damaging the surface, though you should avoid leaving standing water for extended periods. Avoid using abrasive scrubbers, steel wool, or harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia, as these can damage the wear layer. Rubber-backed mats should be avoided directly on LVP, as the rubber can cause discoloration over time. Instead, use mats with felt or fabric backing at entryways. Felt pads under furniture legs will prevent indentation and scratches, and furniture coasters distribute weight from heavy pieces. If a plank becomes damaged, one advantage of click-lock LVP is that individual planks can be replaced without disturbing the surrounding floor. We keep records of every product we install so we can source matching replacement planks if needed. With basic maintenance, LVP floors maintain their appearance for 15 to 25 years, making them an excellent long-term investment for your home.

Common questions about luxury vinyl plank in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
LVP installation in the PA and NJ area typically costs $5 to $10 per square foot, including materials and labor. Entry-level products with 12-mil wear layers start around $5 per square foot, while premium SPC and WPC options with 20+ mil wear layers range from $7 to $10. We provide itemized estimates so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
Yes. Modern luxury vinyl plank with SPC or WPC cores is 100% waterproof at the plank level. Water will not damage the core material even with prolonged exposure. However, if water seeps through gaps between planks and reaches the subfloor, it can cause issues underneath. Proper installation with tight seams and sealed perimeters minimizes this risk.
A single room (200 to 300 square feet) is typically completed in one day. A full first floor of 800 to 1,200 square feet usually takes 2 to 3 days, including subfloor preparation and trim work. Whole-house installations of 1,500+ square feet generally take 3 to 5 days. We provide a detailed timeline during your free estimate.
In most cases, yes. Click-lock LVP can float over existing tile, sheet vinyl, laminate, or hardwood as long as the surface is flat, clean, and in good condition. Grout lines in tile must be level with the tile surface. If the existing floor is uneven or damaged, removal or leveling may be needed. Our team assesses this during the free estimate visit.
The biggest difference is water resistance. LVP is fully waterproof, while laminate will swell and warp when exposed to moisture. LVP is also softer and quieter underfoot. Laminate tends to be slightly less expensive ($4 to $8 per square foot vs. $5 to $10 for LVP) and some people prefer its harder, more rigid feel. For kitchens, bathrooms, and basements, LVP is the clear winner.
Quality LVP with a 20-mil or thicker wear layer typically lasts 15 to 25 years in residential settings. Premium products with 28-mil wear layers and enhanced UV coatings can last even longer. The lifespan depends on foot traffic, maintenance, and wear layer thickness. Unlike hardwood, LVP cannot be refinished, so the wear layer is the primary factor in longevity.
LVP is one of the best flooring options for basements. Its waterproof core handles the moisture common in below-grade spaces, and it can be installed directly over concrete with a proper moisture barrier. Many of our customers in Lehigh Valley and northern NJ choose LVP specifically for basement finishing projects where hardwood and laminate are not recommended.
Absolutely. During your free in-home estimate, our project manager brings a curated selection of LVP samples so you can see colors, textures, and plank sizes in your home's lighting. We also have access to full sample collections from Shaw, COREtec, Mohawk, and other brands. Seeing samples in your actual space is the best way to make a confident decision.
